Penetang Kings head coach Wes Parent did a lot of talking with his players over the weekend, as the Kings suffered losses in two of three games. A 3-1 road loss to the Alliston Hornets on Nov. 18 knocked the Kings out of first place in the league standings.

With an excellent opportunity to take over sole possession of first place in the league standings, the Penetang Kings let one slip away on Sunday in Alliston.

A third-period goal by Zenon Byblow provided the insurance maker, as Alliston posted a 3-1 home-ice win over Penetanguishene in Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Junior C Hockey League regular-season action.

It was a mixed weekend of results for the Kings, who defeated Alliston at home 3-1 on Nov. 16 and then lost the following night to the Erin Shamrocks 5-3 in Erin.

Meanwhile, the Midland Atlas Block Flyers struggled in an 8-2 loss to the Fergus Devils on Nov. 16 in Fergus. On Nov. 15 the Flyers lost 5-4 to the Schomberg Cougars in overtime.

In Sunday’s loss to Alliston, Kings forward Bradyn Parent scored in the first to provide the visitors with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. However, Alliston responded with two goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the middle stanza. One of the two Hornets goals was scored on the power play.

Chris Daniels suffered the loss in goal for the Kings, in a game where 56 minutes in penalties were handed out. Parent, Wendel Jacobs and Aaron Duval all earned major penalties.

On Friday night in Penetanguishene, 362 fans watched the Kings skate to a 3-1 win over Alliston. Kelly Loughran, Rob Greenslade and Kevin Imhoff each scored Penetang. Imhoff’s goal was an empty-net marker, while Loughran scored with the Kings holding the man advantage. Penetang held a 35-23 edge in shots in the game, with Daniels posting the netminding win.

Despite the win, the Kings continued to struggle on the power play, going one-for-seven.

In Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Alliston, the Kings went goalless in all three power-play chances.

On Thursday, the Kings opened up weekend play with a 5-3 upset road loss to the Erin Shamrocks.

After Tyler Lumley provided the Kings with a 1-0 lead, Erin responded with four unanswered goals. Shane Martin later narrowed the gap to 4-2, before Kevin Imhoff later scored the third and final Penetang goal. Corey Moore was tagged with the goaltending loss, in a game where Erin led 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 after 40 minutes.

The Kings failed to score on all 12 of their power-play opportunities.

In their 8-2 loss to Fergus, Gianni Cappellano and Josh Asselin scored for Midland, with Tyler Bly and Brian Valentine sharing the goaltending chores. Bly played the first 27 minutes, before giving way to Valentine.

Fergus led 3-2 after one period and extended their lead to 7-2 after 40 minutes.

Greg Wilkey scored two goals for Midland in the 5-4 loss to Schomberg. Josh Asselin and Ben Raney added singles. Schomberg led 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 after 40 minutes. Tyler Bly suffered the goaltending loss, with Midland holding a 46-45 edge in shots. In the third period, the Flyers held a 21-10 edge in shots.

Following weekend action, the Alliston Hornets (17-2-0-0) hold down first place with 34 points, followed by Penetang (16-4-0-0) with 32 points. Fergus (14-3-0-0) sits in third place with 29 points, followed by Erin (8-11-0-0) with 16 points.

The Midland Atlas Block Flyers (6-11-1-2) have slipped into fifth place with 15 points, followed by Stayner and Schomberg with eight and three points respectively.

On Nov. 22, Penetang travels to Schomberg to take on the Cougars.

The following evening, Penetang battles Midland in an 8:30 p.m. showdown at the Penetanguishene Arena.

On Nov. 24, Midland hosts Stayner in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre.

On the same evening, Fergus battles the Penetang Kings at 8:30 p.m., at the Penetanguishene Arena.
