On Wednesday, May 7, the Screen One Film Series, a project of the Barrie Film Festival, presents Starting Out in the Evening.
It’s a film that paints an elegant portrait of love and loss, weaving a tale about memory, imagination and the struggle to meet one’s own potential amid the literary scene of New York.
The film was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and screened to popular acclaim at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.
Frank Langella (Good Night and Good Luck) stars as Leonard Schiller, a retired professor and all-but-forgotten novelist who is the picture of old-fashioned decorum and steadfast dignity. He is still grieving over the loss of his wife and unable to finish his current project, which he’s been writing for years.
With his novels out of print, his life’s work is a hint away from complete obscurity, when a sudden interruption from Heather Wolf (Lauren Ambrose, Diggers, TV’s Six Feet Under) an impulsive, clever and charming graduate student forces Leonard to break out of his routine and his oft-desired solitude.
