A leisurely drive to Kitchener on a glorious spring day Tuesday quickly turned into a harrowing experience for a Barrie woman when her car caught fire.
Chanene Fiske was driving south in the left lane on Highway 400 near Innisfil Beach Road at about 9:15 a.m. when her 2000 Ford Taurus started to loose power. When she tired to accelerate the car continued to slow down.
“Then I saw the smoke and the flames come so I booted her to the side,” she said, as she watched Innisfil firefighters put out the blaze.
After she pulled over, Fiske lifted the hood of the vehicle to see if there were still flames.
“I saw them and I got the heck out of there,” she said. “Then I ran into the ditch and called 911.”
Fiske said the fire claimed her purse, which contained cash and her identification, as well as a suitcase full of clothing she had packed for a trip she was making to see her sister in Kitchener.
OPP closed the southbound lanes of Highway 400 at Innisfil Beach Road for about 40 minutes while firefighters put out the flames.
Fiske’s car was destroyed in the fire.
