Checkmate … I hope! Joel Lamontagne cautiously makes what he hopes will be a winning move in his fifth chess game of the day at the Simcoe County chess tournament on Wednesday. Joel, a Grade 4 student at Orchard Park Elementary School in Orillia, was among hundreds of students playing in an all-day tournament at the Simcoe County District School Board, hoping to bring home a first-place medal.

Youngsters from all over the county put on their Ruy Lopez openings, castled and fianchettoed their bishops, in trying to win an all-day chess tournament in Barrie this week.
