While it might take a week to build a home from the ground up, it’s going to take Barrie builders only three days.
The Greater Barrie Home Builders Association (GBHBA) and the Barrie Construction Association (BCA) have joined forces to build a home between June 20 and 22 to benefit Gilda’s Club.
“The plan is to build a house from the ground up over a weekend, sell it and donate the proceeds to Gilda’s Club,” said Matt Pryce, president of the GBHBA.
The GBHBA has tackled a similar construction challenge before with its Build for the Cure initiative, building a home in 2004 in only 57 hours.
The build raised $200,000 for the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.
This will be the first such build for the BCA, but according to Scott Ward, president of the BCA board of directors, they can’t wait to start working.
“The build will take place on a lot that is already secured in the south end of Barrie,” said Ward.
“The home will be built by professionals from both associations and we’re hoping that most of the building materials will be donated, also, by the members of GBHBA and the BCA.”
Patricia Gilbert, president of Gilda’s Club, said they are thrilled to be the recipient of the funds raised from the build.
“I think this is absolutely amazing. It’s tremendous that these two associations would get together and get donated land, get donated materials and build a house with actual physical labour for Gilda’s,” she said.
The funds from the sale will go to Gilda’s Open the Red Door Capital Campaign to raise $2.5 million for a Gilda’s Club facility to be built on the RVH grounds.
“When you talk about raising $2.5 million, you can’t do that overnight. We appreciate all the community support we receive,” Gilbert said. “I’m going to be there at the build with work boots and hard hat. If nothing else, I will do the coffee runs."
