BARRIE - Ontario is investing $331,023 to upgrade roofs, wires, windows and security systems for agencies that serve people with special needs, and vulnerable women and children.
“The best way to improve Ontario’s economy is to invest in our people and our communities.
Improving the health and safety, accessibility and energy efficiency of social service agencies creates jobs – and most importantly – hope,” said Community and Social Services Minister Madeleine Meilleur.
Simcoe Community Services – Barrie’s Community Living agency that helps to integrate people with intellectual disabilities – received $200,400 to help with a variety of repairs and upgrades at group homes.
“Simcoe Community Services is very pleased to be receiving this money. It will go a long way to improve health and safety, security as well as accessibility in many of the community homes operated by (us) in Barrie,” said the agency’s executive director Terry MacMillan.
“This funding enables the organization to carry out its mission to provide quality supports for people with an intellectual disability.”
SCS operates almost 20 group homes in Barrie, as well as others in Springwater, Oro-Medonte and Orillia. The agency also offers a supported independent living program, as well as day programs, a foster program, and programs to support families.
The Women and Children’s Shelter also received $72,000 for energy efficiency and security upgrades.
Catulpa Community Support Services received $30,000 to replace the roof at its Ferris Lane offices, located in what’s known as the Common Roof.
Camphill Communities, which also supports people with intellectual disabilities, received $20,623 to help with wiring upgrades.
“This investment will help local service providers improve security, accessibility and energy efficiency at facilities that support vulnerable Ontarians of all ages. It will also create more jobs and boost economic growth,” said Barrie MPP Aileen Carroll.
