A 20-year-old Barrie man entered in-custody pleas this week to two counts of criminal harassment involving the same victim and receiving time served with 24 months on probation.
Prosecutor Jennifer Armenise told the court that Jesse Scotchburn and his partner had been a couple from 2006 until mid 2007 when they separated.
In the fall of 2007, the victim found herself barraged by over 400 calls, MSN messages and text messages all emanating from Scotchburn. He also allegedly sent a Facebook message to her with a photo on it.
At some point, the messages took on a more ominous tone. The accused addressed the victim by name, adding "Your whole family are a bunch of window-washers, and you're a f- sl-."
On October 3, there came a chilling death threat, targeting the victim and her deceased family members. "Die, you f- b-, lie in the dirt with your f- family; die slowly," read Armenise from her synopsis.
By April 2008, after the victim and her brother had logged over 90 "missed calls on her machine", police were informed and executed the outstanding warrant on Scotchburn.
"This was all electronic, not face-to-face?" asked Justice Joe Wilson.
"Yes," replied the Crown.
While on a suspended sentence, the accused will stay off alcohol and out of Wasaga Beach unless he's travelling through it. All contact with the victim and her brother is ended for two years and a 100-metre limit pertaining to both will be in effect.
Wilson further imposed a five-year weapons ban and a DNA order in the case.
