Common sense is the best protection against a home invasion, says a Barrie police officer.
Two home invasions happened over the weekend, and while the circumstances were different, police said locking doors and keeping a few lights on is the best defence.
“Know who’s in your area, and use common sense,” said Sgt. Steve Wilson.
He said residents can’t be paranoid each night before they go to bed, but they shouldn’t leave valuables outside to tempt thieves.
When asked if a home security system would help, Wilson was unsure.
“That’s the thing about home invasions; everything’s different about them,” he said.
Officers were called to Steel Street Sunday after a man was beaten Saturday night. Officers said two men forced their way into his home and assaulted him. The victim was taken to hospital and given 13 stitches to his head. Police said the man knew the culprits and police is still investigating.
Police are also looking for two suspects after a different home invasion on John Street. Two men rang the doorbell of the home, and when the door opened, they forced their way inside. One man had a knife and cut the occupant. The men asked for money but left before getting anything. The victim had minor injuries.
The first man is described as white, 30 to 40 years old, 5'6" - 5'11" with short dark hair. He was wearing a dark T-shirt and pants, was clean-shaven, with a medium build and brown eyes. The second suspect is a white man around 5’7”, 180 pounds. He has blonde or red hair, and was wearing a light T-shirt and shorts.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det./Cst. Don Moore at 725-7025 ext. 2126 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
