Like every parent, Glenn Fenster would do anything for his son.

But he’s literally gone the extra mile for 14-year-old Nyle, to help the fight against epilepsy.

Fenster lives in Florida and has spent the last three years riding his bicycle across North America.

His goal is to spread awareness about the seizure disease.

He stopped in Barrie Wednesday and was staying overnight at the Comfort Inn.

“I want to unite epilepsy families and let them know it’s alright for people with epilepsy to have normal lives,” he said.

This trip is 13,000 kilometres and he left Denver, Colorado on April 28.

“I ride to show my son no matter what disability you have, anything can be accomplished.”

Riding for the most part on his own, Fenster said it’s missing his son that’s the hardest part.

“This is the third father’s day I’ve missed. It’s not the weather I confront or the elevations I climb, or the 18-wheel trucks that narrowly miss me. I miss the time I get to see him.”

At the age of two, Fenster’s son started to have multiple seizures. At the age of nine, he had a seizure while playing tennis with his dad.

“I’m a tennis pro back home and Nyle was going to hit a shot and a seizure occurred. I gave him my hand to get back up and he slapped it away.

“He’s the strongest person I know. I asked him how he keeps getting back up and he told me that as his father, he’s never seen me not get up.”

From there, Fenster sold his car, bought a bike and started training to ride across America.

In 2006, he went from Seattle to Miami, and last year he went from Alaska to Miami.

“I’m a man on a mission with a message. To never give up; each day offers the opportunity to achieve the impossible.”

He is asking residents in Barrie to support the Canadian Epilepsy Alliance.

“People in Canada have been amazing, it feels like family.”

Sponsored locally by Back Alley Designs, Fenster is thankful for everyone’s help.

In 18 days, his trip will come to an end, although for Fenster, it’s just the beginning of the quest to find a cure.
