Megan Whitwam has been busy making key chains and jewelry to sell at her upcoming fundraiser barbecue.

Sidelined by a rare form of cancer this spring, 10-year-old Megan Whitwam has been treating each day as a jewel, and making jewellery that she can sell at a fundraiser Saturday.

Diagnosed with Endolymphatic Sac Tumour in 2005, Megan underwent radiation treatment and was in remission. Her family thought she was in the clear; however, in April, doctors discovered that a new tumour had formed on the back of her neck.

“We’ve been at Sick Kids four times since April. It’s really crazy right now,” said Joanne Jones, Megan’s mom, adding Megan’s spinal fluid has also begun leaking.

“We have to be very cautious because she can get meningitis. She can get lots of infections now so we are walking on pins and needles really.”

Because of her pain, Megan has been unable to attend school and Jones has been staying home with her daughter. This, along with the usual added expenses that come with paying for medicine and trips to the Hospital for Sick Children is putting the family in a financial squeeze.

Friends have pitched in and are holding a fundraising barbecue to help with Megan’s medical costs.

The barbecue will take place Saturday, June 21 at Joe’s No Frills in Barrie. Aside from the food and drinks, Megan will be at the barbecue selling her homemade key chains.

“Because she has been out of school she has been making jewelry like crazy,” said Jones. “She has bracelets and necklaces as well as her key chains.”

Joe’s No Frills is located at 165 Wellington St. W.

A trust account has also been set up at the TD Canada Trust at 624 Yonge St. to help Megan and her family. Branch number 2079, Account number 6080882.

Cheques should be made out to Joanne Jones in Trust.

Anyone wishing to help Megan can also make a donation at the barbecue.
