Barrie’s Julia Turner is getting set for the trip of a lifetime.
The Acadia University student, will not only spend time volunteering in another province, but will have the chance to volunteer in another country.
On June 19, Turner will head to Moose Jaw, Sask., before heading to Uruguay.
“It’s only really just started to hit me that I am going. I am a little overwhelmed,” Turner said. “I get to go to Uruguay and perfect my Spanish and have some abroad experience. But I am also very excited to go to Moose Jaw, it’s an opportunity I never would have gotten before.”
Turner was selected for the Canada World Youth program, where Canadians between the age of 17 and 24 are paired up with youth from an exchange country to do volunteer work.
The political science student, who is hoping to get into international development, said it will be a great learning opportunity.
Turner will first travel to Moose Jaw where she will be paired up with a Uruguayan student.
The two will work with a group in Moose Jaw for three months, before heading to Uruguay to work on another project for three months.
“I’m really lucky because I am not staying in Ontario. I get to go to two places I have never been before,” Turner said.
Turner will miss her first semester of school while in the program, but said she couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
“When I get back I will be doing an independent readings course about it” she said. “I am going to write a paper on it and get a credit for it at school.”
To help pay for her trip, Turner will be holding a garage sale on May 24.
The garage sale will take place Saturday at 20 Marion Cres. in Barrie, starting at 8 a.m.
