The year was 1952, and a group of 22 singers gathered in the stairwell of King Edward Public School to form the beginnings what would become Barrie’s longest-lasting and biggest choir.

Built in 1907, King Edward School will mark its closing in June. The King Edward Choir (a more than 80 voice adult choir), along with the King Edward Public School Primary Choir (under the direction of teacher, Mrs. Cathy Miller) will join together in a celebration of history and song on May 10.

The students have been practicing the school scene from the beloved Anne of Green Gables musical.

Under the artistic direction of conductor Barbara McCann, this special Mother’s Day performance will include memorable melodies from folk music to show tunes. The featured soloist will be Angela Lafontaine, who will sing the part of Miss Stacey in the Anne of Green Gables piece. Soprano Susan Cowan will sing Lusty Month of May, from Camelot.

As well, Christine Helleppe and George Laver will have solos.

The show takes place at Collier Street United Church, at 7:30 p.m., on May 10. Tickets are available at Music in Fusion, by calling 726-1916,  or online.
