Film festival screening
The Screen 1 Film Series presents Bright Star for its December screening. Bright Star is the story of a secret love affair between English poet John Keats and the girl next-door, Fanny Brawne. The illness of Keats’ younger brother brings them together, and he agrees to teach her poetry. When their parents realize the depth of their relationship, they are unstoppable. Only Keats’ illness proved insurmountable. Show times are 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the Bayfield 7 Cinemas. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for seniors and students.

Picture the City
The deadline for entries into the City of Barrie’s photo contest, Picture the City, is Friday, Nov. 27 at 4:30 p.m. The contest is open to photographers of all ages and skill levels. There are a number of categories including nature and landscape, heritage and architecture, and people and culture. Judges will decide on the winners, who will receive gift cards from Henry’s. Midday Music With Shigeru
Midday Music With Shigeru presents Christmas with Mezzo-Soprano Leigh-Anne Martin on Dec. 2. Concert will be held at the Hi-Way Pentecostal Church, starting at noon. Admission is $5 for adults. Students are free.

Book launch
Author James. F. Mitchell, a Barrie author and collision safety expert, will host the official launch of his latest book Reluctant Target: avoiding motor vehicle collisions and other survival tips on Nov. 28. This event runs between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Chapters in Barrie.

6ix Strings at 5ive Points
The 6ix Strings at 5ive Points concert series welcomes Amy Campbell and Corey Heuvel for the Nov. 29 concert. Grandmothers to Grandothers will be selling refreshments. Show starts at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

Samba Olodum Recital

Samba Olodum School Christmas Recital will be held Dec. 13, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Rick’s Place, 511 Bryne Dr. Come enjoy the entertainment by the Samba Olodum Drum School. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 8. Tickets are available at the door. For more information, call 722-6598.

Big Beat North

Big Beat North: Dance, Drum and Dream will be held Dec. 17 between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. at Am Shalom Sanctuary, 767 Huronia Rd. Admission is $20 at the door.
