Fergus goaltender Kenny Lowe makes a diving save for the puck in Sunday's Jr. C game between the Hornets and Devils.

It took just 48 hours after the Jr. C Hornets 11-2 defeat of the Stayner Siskins for the Alliston team to grab hold of the number one spot in the Georgian Mid-Ontario league once again - or at least a piece of it.

Sunday night the Hornets treated fans to an exciting final regular season home game at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre with a 6-5 overtime squeaker over the Fergus Devils.

The win put the green and gold boys from Alliston in a tie for first place in the league with Penetang at 65 points. Alliston still has a game in hand however with 37 games played to Penetang's 38.

Most of the action Sunday night came in the first period as the game started with back and forth goals. Alliston got on the board first with a goal just 15 seconds into play from Kyle McPherson assisted by Jason Campeau and Aaron Maltais.

Fergus' Dave Cutten tied it up on a power play just before the seven minute mark.

Then Aaron Maltais put the Hornets ahead with a power play marker from Campeau.

Goals from Todd Scarrow and Kody Kirton gave Fergus a 3-2 lead in the dying minutes of the first. But before the buzzer sounded Zenon Byblow scored for Alliston off a pass from Kurtis Brossard to tie it at 3-3.

The two teams traded goals in the second frame with Dylan Cunningham scoring for Fergus and Robbie Rutledge notching one for the Hornets leaving the score tied again at 4-4.

Brett Eeles got things started for the Hornets in the third frame assisted by Brandon Elliott. Then Ryan Deboer tied it for Fergus with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The two teams tightened things up after that, sending the game to overtime.

Just over a minute in, Aaron Maltais gave the Hornets the game winner with Byblow and Mitch Ronan on the assists.

The Hornets are in Midland this Friday night to meet the Flyers so there will be no regular home game at the New Tec Rec that night. In fact, there won't be anymore home games for the Hornets before the playoffs. Saturday they are in Erin for a meeting with the Shamrocks and Sunday they travel to Stayner to face the Siskins once again in a busy weekend of play. The Hornets final two games of the regular season will also be played on the road as they wrap the season with games against Fergus and Penetang Feb. 1 and 2 respectively the following weekend.
