“We worked hard and stayed consistent. We didn’t let up,” Hornet winger, Zenon Byblow, said after Friday’s home game against the Fergus Devils.
The Hornets left with a 7-3 win over the Devils after starting out strong and putting three past Fergus goalie Kenny Lowe in the first period.
Jason Campeau put Alliston on the scoreboard five minutes into the period.
Eric Shannon got the second Hornet goal and Robbie Rutledge got the third going one on one with the Fergus goalie and slipping the puck between his pads when he dropped to stop the shot.
The Hornets scored twice within a minute and a half in the second before the Devils’ Brent Kennedy managed to beat Hornets netminder Troy Dowswell, midway through the period.
A few scuffles in the third period resulted in two Alliston players being tossed and given game misconducts.
“Every team gets frustrated at times,” Byblow said of the late-game scraps. “And they took their frustration out on us. Every game is a different game. You can’t come in with the mindset of what’s going to happen. We come out to play the full 60 minutes and not let up.”
The Hornets headed to Penetanguishene on Saturday five men short — two with the game misconducts, two were away, and one player on the injured list. The fact that they didn’t’ have a full roster wasn’t a huge concern for Alliston head coach Darrin Shannon.
“It’s not the perfect scenario, that’s for sure, but it will give the other guys a chance to play in that game,” Shannon said Friday night. “We’ll deal with it and it will be a good challenge for us. One of the things this team has is a lot of depth.”
The Hornets went on to win 6-3 over the second-place Penetang Kings. They were bolstered by an Alliston contingent who arrived on a fan bus to support the team.
After the weekend the Hornets are still in first place with a 21-2-0 record.
The next Hornets’ home game is this coming Fri., Dec. 7, when they will take on the Erin Shamrocks at the New Tecumseth Rec. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
